One roofer with a QBCC licence takes each job from here: they climb up, price it and fix it.
What the ridges do
On a tile roof, the ridge caps sit along the top and the hips, covering the gaps where two roof faces meet. They are held by bedding underneath and sealed with pointing along their edges. When the pointing cracks or the bedding breaks down, water gets under the caps in a storm, and wind can lift them.
Signs it needs doing
- Cracked or crumbling pointing you can see from the ground.
- Ridge caps that look out of line or have moved.
- Bits of mortar in the gutters or on the ground.
- Water stains on the ceiling near the top of the roof or along a hip.
Rebedding or repointing
Repointing replaces the pointing over sound bedding. Rebedding means lifting the caps, removing the old bedding, laying new bedding and refitting the caps, then pointing over. Where the old bedding has failed, repointing over the top does not last. Modern flexible pointing compounds are commonly used because they cope with movement better than old rigid mortar.
Before the coating
On a tile restoration, ridge work comes first. Coating over failed pointing seals in the problem, and the next storm finds it. See tile roof restoration.
