When gutters need replacing
Gutters are often the first part of a roof system to fail. Signs it is time:
- Rust holes or weeping joints.
- Water spilling over the front, or worse, the back, in a storm.
- Sagging lengths that hold water.
- Downpipes that block or have rusted at the joints.
Water spilling over the back of a gutter runs into the eaves and walls, and that damage is far more expensive than the gutter.
What good gutters need
- Enough capacity for the roof area and Toowoomba’s heavy summer storms, with enough downpipes.
- A proper fall so water runs to the outlets rather than sitting.
- Overflow provision, so in an extreme downpour water spills outwards, not into the house.
- Compatible metals. Mixing some metals causes corrosion, so new gutters, downpipes and fixings should suit each other and the roof.
Leaf guard
Gutter guard can reduce how often gutters need cleaning, particularly under big trees. It is not maintenance-free, and it needs to suit the roof profile.
With a restoration
Replacing gutters at the same time as a metal roof restoration or repaint often makes sense, since the access is already set up.
